On 5 April, the Civil Aviation Act 2023 became law. After a lot of work by Quiet Sky Waiheke, the Waiheke Local Board, and Auckland Central MP Chlöe Swarbrick, along with contributions from the Great Barrier Local Board, previous ward councillor Pippa Coom, and MP Helen White, a one-word change was achieved!
The word including was added. Because of this word, when compared to the Civil Aviation Act 1990, the responsible Minister may now make rules for the purposes of noise abatement anywhere, not just in the vicinity of aerodromes.
This means that the Minister can now (but couldn’t before) make rules about helicopter flights, in order to reduce the noise impacts on Waiheke Island (and elsewhere). There is a consultation proceedure to follow, outlined in other parts of the Act.
